Sovereign Lord, Dismiss Us
I’ve written
several songs during a worship service and then sang them on the spot,
but only a few have outlived each particular gathering. Some songs that
have stuck around for other occasions are: Build Your Fire, For God So
Loved, and Emmanuel, You Came.
While worshipping with Kent Covenant Church (near Seattle, WA) this past
Christmas season, I was struck with the Scripture Reading. A good friend
of mine was reading Simeon’s response to Jesus as he held Jesus in his
arms. (LK 2) As she was reading it, I thought, “how cool would that have
been for that old man, I would like to sing those words” – then I
thought “I’d like to sing those words at someone’s funeral” – then I
thought, “this would be a good collection of words for a benediction to
this morning’s service”. So I sang it through three times explaining 1)
words of Simeon 2) words for a believer’s memorial service 3) words to
close the worship service. It was meaningful for us that Sunday
morning...
So what do you think? Should I sing the song again, let other people
know about it, or file it away as just another song written for just one
occasion? Let me know. Click the title to go over to the page to listen,
read the lyrics and print the lead.
