Praise for Tunes Tutus and
Turning Wheels "Much of what makes Cynthia Newland's Dueling Dudes such a delight is the way it shoots holes in conventional notions of disability Here, it's not a deficit to be pitied or a hurdle to overcome. In Dueling Dudes, it's simply as much a fact as dancers' arms and legs. It isn't dwelled on or ignored, but fully incorporated in a sly and seamless fashion that's refreshingly honest and charming. Crutches aren't so much a crutch; they're a percussion instrument or a pole prop to swing on. Wheelchairs aren't a hindrance; they're an asset, whirling around the stage in a mock gunfight or a swinging, swirling chair dance. The real focus is on ability. Dance's focus always has been there, and Newland's choreography expands that spotlight in an eye-opening way." Sherry Clarion Ledger Jackson, MS |
